#108 Digital Backup Plans: Because Censorship Has Nine Lives

Posted on September 15, 2025March 3, 2026 Dr. Harmony By Dr. Harmony No Comments on #108 Digital Backup Plans: Because Censorship Has Nine Lives
Skill Level: Beginner
What This Tool Is

A digital backup plan is your insurance against authoritarian erasure. When platforms yank accounts, delete posts, or throttle resistance content, your message doesn’t have to vanish with it. Backups give the resistance nine lives — every time they try to kill our voice, we respawn louder.

Why It Matters

The fascists aren’t just passing laws; they’re pressuring tech companies to muzzle us. TikTok, Meta, and X are already silencing political accounts. If your organizing lives only on one app, one ban can decapitate your entire network. Backup plans mean resilience: you don’t just survive the purge, you keep fighting.

Step-by-Step Survival
  1. Diversify Platforms
Don’t put all your claws in one litter box. Post across multiple platforms — Bluesky, Mastodon, Telegram, Signal, and good old-fashioned email lists.
  2. Archive Everything
Save your posts, blogs, graphics, and videos in at least two places: one cloud service and one physical drive. Encrypted USBs are cheap, tiny, and perfect for stash points.
  3. Mirror Your Sites
If you run resistance websites, create mirrored backups. Services like GitHub Pages, IPFS, or even old-school WordPress mirrors can keep content live if your main domain gets yanked.
  4. Go Old-School
Zines, flyers, and USB drops might sound retro, but the state can’t censor a folded piece of paper passed hand to hand. Analog backups are un-deletable.
  5. Encrypted Channels
Move sensitive organizing to secure spaces like Signal, Session, or Matrix. If one channel gets nuked, you already have a backup chat running elsewhere.
  6. Test Your Escape Routes
Don’t just make backups — practice using them. Can your crew still find each other if your main account goes dark? If not, build redundancy until the answer is yes.
Kitty’s Final Swipe

Authoritarians think deleting your account deletes your movement. Joke’s on them — the resistance doesn’t live on one server. We’re everywhere, we’re mirrored, and we’ve got claws scratching across every platform they can’t control. When they hit “delete,” we hit “upload.” Nine lives, baby.
