Trump’s latest executive order declaring a “Communications Emergency” to seize control of public broadcast infrastructure is facing legal backlash. Civil liberties groups (including the ACLU and EFF) are suing on the grounds that this violates the First Amendment and oversteps presidential authority. Judges in DC and the 9th Circuit have already issued temporary injunctions blocking enforcement—aka, Daddy Fascist doesn’t get to hijack the airwaves just yet.
2. GOP Pushes “Patriot Privacy Act” (Spoiler: It Does the Opposite)
House Republicans are pushing a bill that claims to “protect Americans’ privacy” but actually expands domestic surveillance. The bill gives the DHS and NSA more leeway to monitor “potentially subversive content” online, which includes… community organizing pages? Climate protests? Disabled TikTokers calling for Medicare? You bet your whiskers it does. This is the digital dragnet 2.0.
3. Florida Sheriff Launches “Pre-Crime” Policing Pilot
Because nothing says “freedom” like arresting you before you commit a crime, Pasco County, Florida is expanding a predictive policing program. This data-driven fascism lets local cops harass residents flagged by algorithmic suspicion—especially poor families, disabled folks, and youth. The ACLU is demanding the program be dismantled, and several federal suits are pending. Fun fact: this tech was partially funded by Amazon Ring partnerships. Stay creepy, Bezos.
