And when someone tells you that something enormously consequential is completely normal, develop the deeply inconvenient habit of asking them to show you the receipts.
Because authoritarianism does not always arrive wearing jackboots.
Sometimes it arrives with a confirmation vote, a crypto wallet, an executive order, and somebody’s wife getting a new chair.
